Poulan made use of an old truck fender and then fashioned it into a curved piece to guide the chain. The "bow guide" allowed the chainsaw to be utilized by a single operator and this quickly revolutionized the booming, in the wood cutting industry.

Poulan Chain Saws was established in Shreveport Lousiana in 1946 where they produced chainsaws utilizing existing engines that were purchased mainly from other manufacturers. In the year 1951, Poulan began production of its chainsaws that were internally developed and manufactured.

The company is now owned by the Electrolux Company and it is currently the largest manufacturer of chainsaws in the world.
